Open Eyes

I often wonder if we grasp the miraculous exchange which takes place when Jesus, “recovers sight for the blind?” (Luke 4:18)

Do we realize the magnitude of such a providential promise? The weight of this reality is a cherished gift for all who once found themselves walking in darkness. This prophecy foretold in Isaiah, and now fulfilled in Luke, reaches far beyond the physical realm of seeing eyes. It penetrates deep below the body’s surface, and pierces the spiritual eyes, soundly sleeping in the chambers of our heart. The truth is; we are all spiritually blind until a soul-illuminating encounter with the Light of the world. Without Jesus opening our eyes, we lack the ability to see our own brokenness, and we lack the ability to see the truth of our depravity.

When Jesus recovers our sight, we recover from a multitude of iniquities including; bitterness, pride, jealousy, resentment, addiction, adultery, greed, and lust.

As a fallen people, we are blinded by money, power, control, status, success, sex, and prestige.

These harmful transgressions keep us bound in darkness, wandering in a blindfolded stupor, as we angrily point blame somewhere…anywhere…besides ourselves. We are visionless, and hopeless, due to our own perpetual sin.

Only when we are confronted by Truth will our eyes be open to the light of Christ. This is why He came, to set us free from ourselves. “For the light makes everything visible. This is why it is said, ‘Awake, O sleeper, rise up from the dead, and Christ will give you light.’” (Ephesians 5:14)

Wake us up Lord, we beg you, our lives are meaningless without spiritual eyesight. Our blindness is killing us and separating us from You.

Until we realize how lost we are without Jesus, we will never comprehend how utterly thankful we will be once he restores our sight. Gratitude keeps us seeing, walking in victory, and treasuring our freedom from captivity.

Freedom is a billion tiny holy moments over and over again, making all things new, including our view, on a minute-by-minute basis. Mercy recovers our life, as He recovers our sight. And what we once tripped over in the dark is no longer a stumbling block…but a stepping-stone of grace.

Make no mistake; Jesus is in the recovery business.

And should darkness ever befall us again, we need not despair, only confess we are wandering once more, and in need of our savior to recover our sight and open our eyes to see with crystal clarity. His Truth will always open blind eyes, our part, is keeping them open.
